Artificial Intelligence (AI)

What is Prompting?

Sometimes you'll hear the word "prompting" or "prompt engineering", and wonder what that has to do with AI.

Prompting, in this instance, means what you're typing in the chat box of the AI (think of it like you are writing something and prompting it (ChatGPT for example) to respond).

Prompt engineering is how you word or construct the prompt that goes into the chat box.

Prompting Tips

Some General Tips:

  1. Provide background or context in your prompt, or ask for it to play a role.

  2. Provide an example of what you're looking for. Maybe you want the response to look a certain way (e.g. a template), or maybe it's easier to give an example of what you're wanting.

  3. Give very detailed instructions, this includes everything from what you're looking for to how you want it presented to you to asking for its sources.

  4. Not too happy with what ChatGPT gives you? Ask for it answer differently, or even say "give me __ more options".

  5. Save your prompt in document or spreadsheet, if you need to use it often!

  6. Want to change topics or change the subject? Start a new Chat and ask the new question there!

For Example:

Too Broad:
Give me topics on solar power for a research paper.

Okay:
Give me 5 topics on solar power for a Composition II research paper.

Better:
Act as an academic expert in alternative energy. Give me 10 topics on solar power for a Composition II research paper.

What Else Can I Do/How Do I Ask for Changes?

Once you have something useful, or something you want to look into further, there are a couple of ways you can, such as:

-Ask for sub topics
-Ask for examples
-Ask for it in different formats (Explain Like I'm 5, Bullet points, etc.)
-Asking for keywords

Let's use the previous example and dive deeper!
-Give me 5 research questions based off [topic].
-Give me 5 subtopics on [research question selected].
-Give me 5 keywords related to [topic] that I can use to search a library database.
-Give me 2 search strings related to [topic] that I can use to search a library database.
